Senggigih Beach - Lombok

This is a very late post. In August 2015, I had another quick working trip slash getaway to the beach, this time to Lombok. Because the main activity was actually for work, I stayed quite far from the beach and could only spend one day at the beach. There's actually not much you can do there. But, it's  always nice to spend time alone, soak in the atmosphere, and be grateful for life.

Go Set a Watchman

I was so excited when I first heard that the work of one of my favourite writers, Harper Lee, was going to be published in July 2015. Go Set a Watchman, the earlier draft of To Kill a Mockingbird.

The publication of Go Set a Watchman drew controversy. From the suspicion of exploitation of the aging author to the unexpected revelation that Atticus, the idolised character in To Kill a Mockingbird, was actually a racist. I bought the ebook with a rather low expectation after reading the ambivalent reviews of critics.

I read the book remembering that it was a first draft and despite that, I find myself to be quite fascinated by the story. Yes, the plot and the narrative are not as neatly written as To Kill a Mockingbird. The narrative of To Kill a Mockingbird is very endearing, to me. In To Kill a Mockingbird, we were being drawn by the voice of a kid as she learns about about prejudice, about racism, about equality, about what is right. In one of his book, Yalom once said, what children don't understand,  they invent. This is what we exactly see from Scout, Jem, and Dill, the logic of children, trying to make sense the world around them. I think that's the reason why I was and still am very fascinated by To Kill a Mockingbird and the reason why the book resonate with so many people.

Go Set a Watchman is different. We see Maycomb from the eyes of Scout as a young adult. It sets itself up as a coming of age story. She has established a set of values, but no quite so. In her mind, her values are set with Atticus as the moral compass. She idolises her father and her world is shattered when she learns that her father is actually a racist. Her father defended Robinson just because there are some doubts that Robinson was actually guilty of the alleged crime, not because he was an equal, had the same rights, and also a human. Her father only defended him, just in the case's context. To give the same civil rights to black is entirely a different case. According to his father, it is the same as giving special privileges to them and they are not entitled to that, because they haven't earned it, because they're backward. In simple words, at the end, Scout understands that we are our own watchman and we have to accept people although their views are different from us.

That being said, I think it's not only Scout's world that shattered. A lot of people's world are also shattered. Atticus is a role model. The symbol of courage and compassion. Go Set a Watchman, can be said, ruins that image. We see Atticus as our moral compass. Our watchman. We find that kind of archetypal character in a lot of stories. Gandalf, in The Lord of The Rings. Dumbledore in Harry Potter. Aren't we all looking for that archetypal character in real life? That's why religions and a lot of ideologies thrive, because they provide us with a moral compass.

In oversimplified conclusion, I think the significance of Go Set a Watchman is the realisation that good and evil exist simultaneously in the same person. No one is perfect and that's okay.

I enjoyed the book. A lot. Although, yes, if we read it as stand alone novel, if we haven't read To Kill a Mockingbird, we fail to understand why Scout idolises her father so much. The good deeds her father did, defending Tom Robinson, was mentioned only in passing. But after all, Go Set a Watchman is only an earlier draft.

The Flowers

I often work on the veranda at home overlooking a small backyard and I'm always drawn into this frangipani tree, sitting in the corner of the backyard. Somehow every time I see its flowers, I remember what my mom says all the time, to always look at the bright side of life and it always brings a smile to my face.

I think frangipani tree is a must have on everybody's backyard. It doesn't require a lot of space, very easy to maintain, but the shape of the tree and the flowers give you such a picturesque view to brighten up your day.

Another mandatory plant to have at home is moth orchid. It lasts quite long when you put it in a pot and you can put it as a decorative flower almost everywhere at home. You just need to put several ice cubes on the pot every other day in order to maintain its longevity.

The tuberose is another flower to be considered at home. Although it doesn't last long when used as a decorative part of your home decor, it sure brings an enchanting aroma and it looks gorgeous.

But, in general, you could just create a makeshift decoration out of everything you find at home.

It's nice to have a little bit of nature at home. When you get really lucky, you get to see a gem such as the picture below.

The Contemplation

Bali is a either a place for you to let go of all your inhibition or a place for you to contemplate, I went there for the latter.

Stayed in Nusa Dua, quite far away from the madding crowd, I found myself in deep contemplation. Thinking of what I want in life. Finding a way out from the ongoing quarter life crisis.

The Land of The Rising Sun

I always wanted to go to Japan and finally I had the chance to go on December 2014. From Jakarta, we flew to Tokyo and from there, by Shinkansen we went directly to Kyoto and we planned to explore Tokyo after we visited Kyoto and Osaka.

KYOTO

I didn't take many pictures because sometimes my camera gears were just too heavy to handle and I didn't even know how to use it. So, here some of the pictures I took while I was there.

OSAKA

Spent only one night in Osaka and because we were very tired, simply put, we just went to areas around our hotel, spent our day having lunch and drink coffee. Since there was no interesting places we visited, the pictures I have from that day are only the pictures of ourselves. LOL.

GOTEMBA

I expect nothing when we were about to go to Gotemba, because all I know about the city, is the premium outlet located there. But I was in for a surprise, when we arrived, we were desperately looking for a cup of coffee since we woke up pretty early and had no time even to have breakfast. We stumbled upon this little coffee joint in the middle of nowhere, which turned out to be owned by a lecturer. He teaches photography and some of his students came and they had some discussions about the works they had done. The owner talked to us as well enthusiastically about his works. Though we experienced some language gap, I could feel his passion and his thirst for art.

The second surprise was that we can see Mt. Fuji from up there.

TOKYO

Because at the time, my photography skills were close to zero, I decided to stop taking pictures and just enjoy my time in Tokyo without having to make a lot of effort snapping beautiful pictures which is a task that can be daunting.

I spent my time in Tokyo, most of the time, going out alone. Exploring the streets, the abundant thrift shops, sitting alone having coffee in the local coffee shops, observing people. My favourite areas are Harajuku and Omotesando. Stylish areas with a lot to offer.
